On 3 May 1986, China Airlines Flight 334, a cargo aircraft scheduled to depart from Bangkok and stop over in Hong Kong before proceeding to Taipei, was hijacked by Captain Wang Hsi-chueh before reaching Hong Kong and was diverted to land at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport.

On 8 May 1986, Social Welfare Department officers broke down the door of a residential unit in Kwai Hing Estate and rescued six-year-old girl Kwok Ah-nui, who had been confined since birth; the department acted under a 1951 ordinance for the protection of women and children.
