Why is fuel so expensive in Hong Kong?
Retail fuel prices are high because of fuel duty, scarce forecourt land, storage and transport costs, a concentrated market, and the currency peg that transmits dollar oil prices directly.
Hong Kong’s tax system is simple, direct and territorial. The main taxes are profits tax, salaries tax and property tax. There is no VAT, GST, estate duty, dividend withholding tax or capital gains tax, and rates remain among the lowest among developed economies.
Which authority approves fare increases for the MTR, franchised buses, the Star Ferry and trams?
Fare adjustments for the MTR and franchised buses are approved through statutory procedures after review by the Transport and Logistics Bureau and Transport Department, while the Star Ferry and trams follow their own procedures. All fares and patronage figures are officially published.
