What actuaries do
Actuaries use statistical and financial models to assess long-term risk. Typical work includes pricing insurance products, calculating reserves, assessing pension funding and fund solvency, and analysing assumptions such as investment returns, mortality and morbidity. They must set out model assumptions clearly, explain results to management and regulators, and revise models as new data arrives. The output directly shapes pricing, capital and risk-management decisions. An insurer's appointed actuary must also report regularly to the board and the Insurance Authority on the valuation of insurance liabilities and the insurer's financial condition.
The gate: professional examinations
The hard gate is professional examination; a university degree is not sufficient. Finishing an actuarial science programme does not make you qualified; a graduate may gain exemptions from some subjects on university results, but must still complete the remaining examinations while working. Industry material notes it usually takes four to seven years to qualify, during which employers commonly provide course funding, study leave and mentoring. Taking the Actuarial Society of Hong Kong (ASHK) local examination as an example, it is held in English, uses open-book multiple-choice questions, runs twice a year and offers no exemptions.
Local qualification and appointed actuary in Hong Kong
The Actuarial Society of Hong Kong (ASHK) runs a local examination. Becoming an ASHK Fellow requires passes in the Core paper and one Elective paper, Fellowship of at least one designated overseas qualification, and practical experience approved by the Council; the ASHK Certificate is a prerequisite for new Fellows. To be an insurer's appointed actuary you must be an ASHK Fellow or hold the overseas fellowships listed in the Schedule to the Insurance (Actuaries' Qualifications) Regulation, with the Insurance Authority's prior approval.
