What apprentices do day to day
Aircraft maintenance apprentices work on the frontline under licensed technicians: routine inspections, removing and refitting parts, cleaning, lubrication and completing maintenance records, gradually learning aircraft structures, systems and procedures. Much of the work is shift-based in hangars or on the apron, with very high standards of safety, procedure and record-keeping. Apprentices learn on the job while building the experience needed for the HKAR-66 licence. Maintenance work is broadly divided between line maintenance and base (hangar) maintenance, so apprentices usually begin with routine line tasks before moving on to heavier checks in the hangar.
The gate: trainee and apprenticeship schemes
Entry is mainly through an employer's trainee scheme. Take HAECO's AMMT Programme: a 12-month structured programme under which the company fully subsidises trainees who meet the requirements to pursue a part-time Higher Diploma registered under the Office of the Director of Apprenticeship. Trainees joining the Registered Apprenticeship Scheme must have completed the HKDSE with Level 2 or above in five subjects, including English, Chinese and Mathematics; other trainees generally need only completion of the HKDSE or equivalent. The scheme combines structured on-the-job training with assessment and off-the-job study.
The HKAR-66 licence and experience requirements
The long-term professional qualification is the CAD's HKAR-66 aircraft maintenance licence, split into mechanical and avionic disciplines with categories A, B1, B2, B3 and C. For Category A: three years with no prior experience or formal training, two years with recognised skilled-trade training, one year after an approved HKAR-147 basic course. Category B requires longer, e.g. five years for B1.1/B1.3/B2 with no prior experience. Applicants must pass the CAD's modular written examinations (a minimum of 75% per module) and an essay paper.
