根據《保安及護衛服務條例》（第460章），任何人為他人做保安工作以換取報酬，必須向警務處處長申請保安人員許可證。處長按「適當人選」準則審批，有刑事紀錄唔一定自動被拒，但會逐案考慮；必要時會轉交保安及護衛業管理委員會處理。許可證一般有效五年，可續期，續期須於期滿前三至六個月內申請。申請人須年滿十八歲。
保安工作按許可證分四類：甲類（單一私人住宅樓宇嘅護衛工作）、乙類（一般護衛工作，不包括甲類）、丙類（須攜帶槍械彈藥嘅護衛工作）同丁類（裝置、保養、維修保安裝置或設計含保安裝置嘅系統）。機場保安工作一般屬乙類。除類別外，申請人亦要符合處長指定嘅條件；許可證須按規定續期，並在轉換僱主時按程序通知。

Airport security officers provide aviation security across Hong Kong International Airport, covering passenger and crew screening, X-ray screening of baggage, cargo and mail, boarding-gate security control, airside access control, restricted-area patrols and document checks, as well as guarding facilities. Most posts are shift-based in the terminal or on the apron, requiring strict adherence to procedures and record-keeping, and prohibited items must be handled according to guidelines. Airport security officers must complete employer training, and courses at the AVSECO academy follow the Hong Kong Aviation Security Programme (HKASP) and the Security and Guarding Services Ordinance.
Under the Security and Guarding Services Ordinance (Cap. 460), anyone who does security work for another person for reward must apply to the Commissioner of Police for a Security Personnel Permit. The Commissioner assesses whether the applicant is a fit and proper person; a criminal record does not automatically debar an applicant but is considered case by case, and the application may be referred to the Security and Guarding Services Industry Authority. A permit is normally valid for five years and renewable, with renewal applied for not earlier than six months and not later than three months before expiry. Applicants must be at least 18.
Security work is licensed in four categories: Category A (guarding a single private residential building), Category B (general guarding work not falling within Category A), Category C (guarding requiring the carrying of arms and ammunition) and Category D (installing, maintaining or repairing a security device, or designing a system incorporating one). Airport security work generally falls within Category B. Applicants must also meet conditions specified by the Commissioner; permits must be renewed as required and employers/employees must notify changes of employment under the procedure.

見習航空交通管制主任是公務員職系。教育局生涯規劃網站列明可以用文憑試五科第3級（其中一科為數學、地理、物理、資訊及通訊科技或航空學）投考，不是非要航空學士。
要在香港簽發適航放行，關鍵是民航處 HKAR-66 飛機維修執照，再配合 HKAR-145 維修機構的授權。學徒、認可課程或工程學位，對應不同年期的經驗要求。
