What the role covers
Chemical engineers scale up a process that works in the lab: designing reactors and separation equipment, calculating material and energy balances, selecting corrosion-resistant materials, designing relief and emission systems, setting operating conditions and monitoring quality. They also carry out risk assessment and hazard analysis to meet safety and environmental rules. The field spans petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, food, energy, environmental protection and materials. All of the work must satisfy the relevant safety, health and environmental legislation as well as recognised codes of practice.
Two gates: HKIE membership then RPE registration
The first gate is HKIE membership: an accredited honours degree, adequate training (such as Scheme A), sufficient responsible experience and the Professional Assessment. The second is registration with the ERB as an RPE: an acceptable qualification, one year of relevant post-qualification professional experience before applying, and ordinary residence in Hong Kong. Chemical engineering is one of the Institution's disciplines, and an RPE must be registered in a designated discipline to sign documents on regulated works. For chemical engineering the Scheme A training period is normally two years.
Discipline reality and pay basis
Chemical engineers are often employed by chemical, pharmaceutical and energy firms, consultancies and government departments, handling process design, production technical support, and safety and environmental management. Because the work involves dangerous goods and high-risk processes, both regulation and internal rules are strict, and newcomers usually begin as graduate or assistant engineers. Private-sector pay is set by the employer with no uniform official scale; related government posts follow the civil-service pay scales. Members are also expected to keep up continuing professional development.
