English
Day-to-day work
Home installation and repair take up much of the time: booking appointments with customers, running cables, measuring signal, setting up routers and testing speeds, while exchange and base station work requires switching procedures, labelling and records, and outdoor work demands attention to weather and confined ducts.
Entry and regulation
Secondary education is usual, with a Vocational Training Council telecommunications or electronics course or an apprenticeship. The industry is regulated by the Communications Authority through service licences and technical standards, technicians must follow operator and customer requirements, and electrical installation work must be done by a registered electrical worker.
Pay and progression
The employer sets day rates or monthly pay with no statutory scale; call-out, overnight or emergency repair allowances vary by company, so this site prints no estimate. The route runs apprentice or assistant, telecommunications technician, senior technician or team leader, then network operations or engineering supervisor, with moves into data centre or enterprise network work.
