幼兒工作員在幼兒中心或託管服務照顧幼兒起居，包括餵食、午睡、遊戲與安全看護，並記錄幼兒的健康與發展情況。工作要顧及幼兒的安全與情緒，亦要與家長及其他員工溝通配合。照顧對象年齡小，突發情況多，因此細心與應變能力同樣重要。日常亦要留意中心環境與用具的安全，並適時向家長交代。
在幼兒中心任職的幼兒員工必須註冊為幼兒工作員或幼兒中心主管。註冊由教育局的幼稚園及幼兒中心聯合辦事處與社會福利署共同處理，制度源自《幼兒服務條例》（第243章）及《幼兒服務規例》（第243A章）。按規例第3(1)(a)或(b)條，申請人須成功完成經社會福利署署長認可的訓練課程，方符合註冊資格，並須填妥 JOKC Form 12 及附上證明文件。
註冊的核心條件，是完成經社會福利署署長認可的訓練課程。認可課程清單由教育局公布，涵蓋多年來獲認可的院校與課程。要成為幼兒中心主管，一般需要較高的資歷與經驗。由於制度由法例與規例訂明，中心與從業員都須按官方公布的認可課程名單辦事，未完成認可課程者不合註冊資格。

Early childhood workers care for young children in a child care centre or child care service, covering feeding, nap time, play and safety supervision, and record children's health and development. The work must address children's safety and emotions and involves communicating with parents and other staff. Because the children are very young and situations can change quickly, attentiveness and the ability to respond matter as much as care. They also keep an eye on the safety of the centre's environment and equipment.
Child care staff in a centre must be registered as a Child Care Worker or a Child Care Supervisor. Registration is handled by the Education Bureau's Joint Office for Kindergartens and Child Care Centres together with the Social Welfare Department, under the Child Care Services Ordinance (Cap. 243) and the Child Care Services Regulations (Cap. 243A). Under regulation 3(1)(a) or (b), an applicant must have completed a training course approved by the Director of Social Welfare to be eligible, and must complete JOKC Form 12 with supporting documents.
The core condition for registration is completing a training course approved by the Director of Social Welfare. The list of approved courses is published by the Education Bureau and covers institutions and courses recognised over the years. Becoming a Child Care Supervisor generally requires higher qualifications and experience. Because the system is set by ordinance and regulations, both centres and practitioners must work from the officially published list of approved courses; those who have not completed one are not eligible for registration.

在學校任教，法律上必須是檢定教員或准用教員。有師資培訓與只有學歷、未受訓，是兩條不同的註冊路徑。
補習老師喺補習社或私營教育中心教小學生；唔屬學校教師編制，一般唔需教師註冊，但學校註冊同商業營運規定仍要留意。
小學教師須向教育局註冊；資助學校學位教師一般須持有認可學位同教育師資培訓，語文科另有語文能力要求。
幼稚園教師照顧同教導三至六歲幼兒，設計主題活動、講故事、做美勞同體能遊戲，並記錄幼兒發展同同家長溝通；香港係法定規管行業，任教者須向教育局註冊為檢定教員或准用教員。
