在學校任教，法律上必須是檢定教員或准用教員。有師資培訓與只有學歷、未受訓，是兩條不同的註冊路徑。

資助中小學教師必須在教育局註冊，分「檢定教員」同「准用教員」兩種身分。補習社導師、興趣班導師、企業培訓導師唔受教師註冊規管，條件由僱主自訂，所以同一份「教書」工作，有註冊同冇註冊係兩回事。
Teachers in aided primary and secondary schools must be registered with the Education Bureau as registered or permitted teachers. Tutors in tutorial centres, hobby classes and corporate training fall outside teacher registration, so their terms are set by the employer — two jobs both called "teaching" can sit on completely different footing.

《教育條例》第42條規定，任何人士如果喺學校任教，一定要係檢定教員或者准用教員。准用教員適用於只持有學歷、未接受師資培訓嘅人，要先受僱於一間學校，由校監遞交表格10申請；而檢定教員就要持有教學資格（例如本港嘅教師證書或者學位教師教育文憑），符合香港永久性居民或者非永久性居民嘅入境要求，填寫表格8申請。不論邊種途徑，教育局嘅教員註冊先係合法任教嘅關鍵。
資助學校教師嘅薪酬按教育局公布嘅薪級表計算，該薪級表與公務員總薪級表掛鈎，設有起薪點、每年增薪點同頂薪點；官立學校教師屬公務員職系，另享公務員福利。學校唔可以自行加薪級，所以想提高待遇，一般要靠晉升或者轉職級。實際薪點同金額以教育局同公務員事務局公布嘅現行薪級表為準，本站唔列金額。 晉升方面，由教師可以升為科主任、訓導主任或者課程主任，再上係副校長、校長；資深教師亦可以透過教育局嘅專業發展途徑，轉任課程發展或者教育顧問工作。

Section 42 of the Education Ordinance requires anyone teaching in a school to be either a registered teacher or a permitted teacher. Permitted-teacher status is for those with academic qualifications but no teacher training; you must first be employed by a school, which submits Form 10 on your behalf. Registered-teacher status requires a teaching qualification (such as a local teacher's certificate or PGDE), plus you must be a Hong Kong permanent resident or a non-permanent resident holding valid immigration documents, applying via Form 8. Regardless of your pathway, the Education Bureau's teacher registration is the critical legal step to teach.
Teachers in aided schools are paid on the scale published by the Education Bureau, which is linked to the civil service Master Pay Scale and has a starting point, annual increments and a maximum point. Teachers in government schools are civil servants and enjoy civil service benefits on top. A school cannot top up the scale, so better pay normally means promotion or a change of grade. Actual points and amounts are as set out in the current pay tables published by the Education Bureau and the Civil Service Bureau, and this site prints no amounts. Progression runs from teacher to panel head, discipline head or curriculum head, then vice-principal and principal, and experienced teachers can move into curriculum development or advisory work through Education Bureau professional development programmes.
