The job: teaching plus care
Kindergarten teachers do more than teach: they design and lead themed activities, tell stories, run art, music and physical play, and also look after children's eating, hygiene and emotions, observing and recording their development. They also handle safety and first aid. Day to day there is lesson preparation, classroom displays, communication with parents, and school events and administration. Hours are generally long — around 50 to 60 a week on weekdays — with particularly heavy workloads around term starts, parent meetings and big events.
The gate: teacher registration and qualifications
The Education Ordinance requires anyone teaching in a school to be a registered or permitted teacher, so registration must be sorted out before starting. Those with a recognised teacher training qualification (such as an early childhood education certificate/higher diploma or a postgraduate diploma in education) may apply to the Education Bureau to register as a registered teacher; otherwise the employing school must apply for a permitted teacher. On qualifications, kindergarten teachers generally need an Education Bureau-recognised early childhood education degree or higher diploma; degree holders may also be appointed but normally must complete a qualified kindergarten teacher training course within two years.
Language requirements and industry reality
Kindergarten teachers who teach Putonghua or English must meet the Education Bureau's language proficiency requirements, and for kindergartens in the Kindergarten Education Scheme, newly appointed monthly-paid teachers must pass the Basic Law and National Security Law Test. In the field, turnover among kindergarten teachers is relatively high, and pay is set by each sponsoring body according to the market and qualifications, with no unified official scale. Longer term, as early childhood education moves towards degree-level and greater professionalisation, teachers with recognised credentials — even a degree in early childhood education — enjoy better bargaining power and promotion prospects.
