Tour guides, travel agencies, hotel front office and housekeeping, MICE and event coordination. Guides must hold a Travel Industry Authority licence; hotel and event posts are usually company-trained, and languages (Cantonese, Putonghua, English, sometimes Japanese or Korean) are the most practical asset you bring. Peak season means very long hours.

Nature of the work

People-facing · Managing people and resources · Shift or night work

People-facing

Most of the day is spent dealing with people — customers, patients, students, residents or the public — so communication, patience and emotional control matter.

Managing people and resources

Beyond doing the work yourself, you roster people, time and resources, coordinate between parties and answer for how the team performs.

Shift or night work

Hours are not necessarily nine to six — shifts, overnight work, public holiday duty or being on call — so you manage your own body clock.

English

Day-to-day work

Planning time is mostly meetings, quotations, drawings and schedules with several contractors; on the day it is floor walking, keeping to the timetable, handling last-minute changes and complaints, and at the end checking equipment and settling costs.

Entry and requirements

As advertised by the employer: a sub-degree or degree, good Chinese and English and coordination skills, and availability for overtime and weekend work around events. Project or event experience such as student union or exhibition work helps, and the trade is largely learned through projects.

Pay and progression

The employer sets pay by grade and experience with no statutory scale; overtime and compensation around events vary by company, so this site prints no estimate. The route runs event assistant, event coordinator, project manager, then event director, with moves into exhibition organising, marketing or venue leasing.
