Guides must hold a Travel Industry Authority licence; hotel and event posts are usually company-trained, and languages (Cantonese, Putonghua, English, sometimes Japanese or Korean) are the most practical asset you bring. A guiding day usually starts with assembling the group and boarding, then controlling timing, commentary and group queries through the itinerary, with evening briefing for the next day; in peak periods several groups run at once, so road conditions and backup plans for weather or diversions matter.
You apply to the Travel Industry Authority for a guide licence by category, complete the required training and examination and renew as required; licence holders follow the trade code on shopping and optional items. Entry usually needs good Chinese and English or Putonghua, local history and culture knowledge and the ability to react on the spot.
Pay is usually a base rate plus service fees or per-tour rates with no statutory scale; freelance guides see income move with tour volume, so this site prints no estimate. The route runs guide, senior guide or tour escort, product line supervisor, then travel agency product or operations management, with moves into visitor services, attraction interpretation or training.
