入職要求持飛機維修或相關工程系證書，或完成認可技術員學徒訓練（或同等資歷）；具備相關行業知識；文憑試或會考英國語文科第二級或以上並能以中文溝通；服從紀律同願意輪班；以及係香港特別行政區永久性居民；獲聘後須接受相關保安同安全訓練。甄選過程包括筆試、面試、品格審查同體格檢驗。

Aircraft technicians carry out daily and scheduled inspections, maintenance, modification, refuelling and fault-finding on helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft so the fleet is always ready to launch. Work follows the department's maintenance procedures and record-keeping, because even a minor fault can stop a rescue from taking off, so accuracy, following procedure and complete records are the baseline. Technicians also co-ordinate with aircrew and engineering staff and track parts and tools so that maintenance is completed on time and the aircraft returned to service when promised.
Entry requires a certificate in aircraft maintenance or a related engineering discipline, or completion of a recognised technician apprenticeship (or equivalent); knowledge of the relevant trade; Level 2 or above in English in the HKDSE or HKCEE and the ability to communicate in Chinese; acceptance of discipline and shift work; and permanent residency of the Hong Kong SAR. Selection includes a written examination, an interview, integrity checking and a medical examination. The bar is set so that every technician can work safely and independently on the fleet.
The department provides classroom and on-the-job training covering general aircraft maintenance related to GFS operations and type-specific courses, and selects suitable technicians for training towards a Hong Kong aircraft maintenance licence. The grade runs from aircraft technician to aircraft technical officer, senior aircraft technical officer and chief aircraft technical officer. As rescue work continues day and night, shift work and standby are the norm, and technicians must keep their knowledge of each aircraft type current as the fleet changes over time.
