English
The nature of the missions
Pilots fly search and rescue, air ambulance, police support and firefighting missions over hills, sea and city, some using specialised equipment and winching. Bad weather and night flying are routine, and Hong Kong's hilly, sea-fringed terrain makes low-level and mountain flying demanding and risky, so pilots must keep high standards of skill and judgement under pressure. Rescue missions are often urgent, and crews have to make quick decisions on limited information while working closely with ground teams and controllers to find and recover casualties safely.
Entry requirements and selection
Entry requires Level 3 in five HKDSE subjects including English or equivalent, Level 3 in English, a CAD Class One medical with good vision, passing a pilot technical written test and an aptitude test, a pass in the Basic Law Test, good English, a team spirit, acceptance of discipline and willingness to work shifts, and permanent residency of the Hong Kong SAR. Selection includes a written examination, an aptitude test, a task-based assessment, a medical examination and a final interview.
Training and the road to commander
Cadet pilots are assigned to the fixed-wing or helicopter stream and sent overseas for a fourteen-month course of basic professional pilot training, returning with a Commercial Pilot's Licence after passing the course and examinations. Back in Hong Kong they go through a series of conversion courses to become co-pilots and then commanders. The department notes that it takes about ten years of training and operational experience to become a commander, and pilots undergo regular checks and training under the Civil Aviation Regulations.
