工作實況：專業同執法並重
獸醫主任一日做啲乜，好視乎派去邊個組別：進出口組要檢查動物同動物產品、簽發衞生證明同處理檢疫；動物衞生組專責農場同禽畜疫病監控、疫情調查同疫苗接種；動物管理組就會處理流浪動物、動物福利個案同牌照巡查。無論邊一組，都要寫大量紀錄同報告，並可能要出庭作供。遇上禽流感、非洲豬瘟等重大疫情，更要隨時候命、通宵工作，同衞生署、食安中心等部門協調。想做呢行，除咗醫術，仲要捱得住執法同文書工作。
入職關卡：獸醫註冊條例
香港對獸醫執業有法定註冊要求。《獸醫註冊條例》規定，除非已註冊並持有有效執業證明書，任何人不得施行獸醫手術或提供獸醫服務。首次註冊要向獸醫管理局申請，學歷須在管理局認可名單之內；非本地學歷一般要經審核，部分情況下仲要完成指定臨床訓練或通過指定考試。註冊同執業證明書都有年期，到期要續期。至於政府嘅獸醫主任職位，係另一重關卡——要經公務員事務局嘅招聘程序，包括語文能力要求同《基本法及香港國安法》測試。
行業實況同出路
香港獸醫職位主要集中喺漁農自然護理署、食物安全中心同私人寵物診所。政府獸醫嘅好處係工作穩定、有完整公務員福利同清晰職級；代價係要接受調派、輪值同處理執法個案。私人市場方面，近年寵物診所同專科診所增多，對獸醫需求上升。無論係政府定私人路線，最大關卡都係「註冊」——冇註冊就唔可以執業。想入政府做獸醫，通常先讀完認可課程、取得註冊，再等空缺；想快啲接觸臨床，私人診所嘅招聘節奏會較靈活。

The job: clinical work and enforcement
What a Veterinary Officer does depends heavily on the division: the import and export side inspects animals and animal products, issues health certificates and handles quarantine; the animal health side monitors farm and livestock disease, investigates outbreaks and runs vaccination; the animal management side deals with stray animals, welfare cases and licence inspections. Whichever division, there is heavy record-keeping and reporting, and officers may have to give evidence in court. During major outbreaks such as avian influenza or African swine fever, they may be on call around the clock and coordinate with the Department of Health and the Centre for Food Safety. The job needs clinical skill plus stamina for enforcement and paperwork.
The gate: veterinary registration
Practising veterinary medicine in Hong Kong is governed by statutory registration. The Veterinary Surgeons Registration Ordinance provides that, unless a person is registered and holds a valid practising certificate, they may not perform veterinary surgery or provide veterinary services. First registration is made to the Veterinary Surgeons Board, and the qualification must appear on the Board's recognised list; non-local qualifications are usually assessed, and in some cases the applicant must complete designated clinical training or pass specified examinations. Both registration and the practising certificate run for fixed terms and must be renewed. For the government post there is a second gate: selection through the Civil Service Bureau, including language requirements and the Basic Law and National Security Law Test.
Industry reality and pathways
Veterinary jobs in Hong Kong are concentrated in the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, the Centre for Food Safety and private pet clinics. A government post offers stability, full civil-service benefits and a clear grade structure, at the cost of deployments, shift duties and enforcement cases. In the private market, the number of pet and specialist clinics has grown in recent years, raising demand for veterinarians. On either path the single biggest gate is registration — without it, no one may practise. Those aiming for government usually finish a recognised programme, register, then wait for a vacancy, while those who want clinical exposure sooner often find private clinics recruit more flexibly.
