The job: disciplined-services frontline
Immigration Assistants are usually posted to control points or offices: at the border they check travel documents, verify travellers' identities and identify and report overstayers; in offices they process visas, identity cards and residence applications, and may carry out search, custody and escort duties. The work is shift-based, and with control points running around the clock, night shifts and holiday duties are routine. Beyond uniform and discipline, the job demands care, a strong sense of legality and adaptability, because every traveller's case can have legal consequences.
The gate: academics, fitness and the national-security test
To apply as an Immigration Assistant, applicants need Level 2 or equivalent or above in five HKDSEE subjects (or Level 2/Grade E or above in five HKCEE subjects) and Level 2 or above in both Chinese and English, and must be able to speak Cantonese and English. The selection process includes a physical fitness test (with several items and a scoring method) and interviews, and only those who pass move on; applicants must also pass the Basic Law and National Security Law Test and a pre-employment medical examination, including a colour vision test.
Choosing a grade: Assistant or Officer
The Immigration Department has two main entry routes: the rank-and-file Immigration Assistant and the officer-grade Immigration Officer. They differ in entry qualifications, entry rank and day-to-day work — officers tend to handle supervision, administration and investigation and have higher entry requirements (usually a degree or higher diploma), while assistants form the frontline delivery core. The Assistant post accepts applications year-round, offering more flexibility, whereas the Officer post opens on a recruitment cycle. If the Immigration Department appeals to you, decide first whether you want the frontline or the management track, then apply for the right post.
