The job: from design to site and after-care
Landscape architects do more than draw. In the early phase they analyse the site and visit it, understanding sunlight, wind, soil, drainage and user needs, then devise planting and spatial layouts. At tender stage they write technical specifications, prepare plant schedules and estimate costs. On site, they supervise the quality of planting, soil and irrigation work, making sure trees have enough growing space and soil. After completion they follow up during the maintenance period with watering, pruning and replanting. The job needs an eye for aesthetics as well as knowledge of engineering and plant physiology.
The gate: the Landscape Architects Registration Ordinance
To use the title Registered Landscape Architect, a person must register with the Landscape Architects Registration Board. Applicants are usually members of the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects and must accumulate an additional year of relevant experience after qualifying; those with overseas qualifications undergo assessment to confirm equivalence with the local standard. The Board also requires the applicant to be ordinarily resident in Hong Kong and to handle registration matters if absent beyond a specified period. Note that being an institute member does not automatically mean being registered: the two are separate, the practising title is protected by law, and using it without registration attracts penalties.
Industry reality and pathways
Landscape architects' paths include private consultancies, architectural firms, contractors, developers and government departments. As Hong Kong pushes waterfront enhancement, public space improvement and the Northern Metropolis, the profession's involvement at the early planning stage matters more, no longer confined to adding planting late on. At the same time, climate change raises cities' demands for shade, ventilation, stormwater management and biodiversity, so landscape architects need nature-based solutions. Most entrants aim for registered professional status, because government posts and some consultancy tenders require the Registered Landscape Architect title.
