Observatory Scientific Officers do more than forecasting. Besides analysing weather situations and issuing forecasts and warning signals, they operate radar and satellite systems and provide climate, time and geophysics, radiation monitoring, ocean physics, aviation meteorology, marine meteorology and applied meteorology services, along with data processing and IT support. Some posts involve shift work or on-call duty, and the workload usually peaks during severe weather such as typhoons and rainstorms. Officers may also brief the public, the media and other government departments when significant weather threatens the territory.
Entry requires qualifications, experience or further study, language and the test together. On qualifications, a first- or second-class honours bachelor's degree in a specified science subject is needed; on experience, at least two years of meteorology-related work experience, or a relevant science master's degree in place of experience; on language, Grade 1 in both Use of Chinese and Use of English in the Common Recruitment Examination; and a pass in the Basic Law and National Security Law Test. The Observatory may also arrange local professional training or overseas study.
The Scientific Officer grade is the Observatory's main professional grade. From the bottom up the ranks are Scientific Officer, Senior Scientific Officer, Assistant Director and Director of the Hong Kong Observatory. More senior ranks carry greater supervisory, managerial and external duties and coordinate large service and research projects. The Observatory also arranges local or overseas professional meteorological training to meet the demands of the job. Pay follows the civil-service pay scales for the grade held, as published by the Civil Service Bureau.
