助產士喺產前、分娩同產後照顧孕婦同初生嬰兒，包括產檢、接生、哺乳指導同新生嬰兒評估。入行關卡係必須根據《助產士註冊條例》向香港助產士管理局註冊，並持有效執業證明書方可執業。

《助產士註冊條例》（第162章）設立香港助產士管理局，負責助產士註冊同紀律事務，並訂明執業證明書要求。管理局嘅核心才能同訓練指引列出助產士須具備嘅專業、倫理同法律知識。本地受訓者通過管理局考試後，即合資格申請註冊；註冊後仍須持有效執業證明書先可以執業，並須遵守專業操守守則同持續進修要求。
本地助產訓練一般係註冊後課程，入讀者須先為註冊護士。管理局就課程嘅科目、建議課時同臨床實習要求發出參考指引，院校據此設計課程，學生完成課程並通過管理局考試後可申請註冊。海外受訓人士亦可申請，須提交註冊證明、執業證明同畢業證書等文件，個別評審其資歷。實際課程內容同收生安排，以院校同管理局公布為準。

Midwives provide antenatal checks and health education, monitoring mother and baby; during labour they conduct the birth, watch the progress of labour and the baby's condition, detect abnormalities early and refer. After birth they care for the mother and newborn, support breastfeeding, observe the newborn's health and give parenting support. In maternal and child health centres they also do postnatal checks, family planning and parenting guidance. The pace follows the labour ward, involving shifts, with frequent emergencies that call for calm judgement.
The Midwives Registration Ordinance (Cap. 162) establishes the Midwives Council of Hong Kong to handle midwife registration and discipline and sets out the practising certificate requirement. The Council's core competencies and training guides set out the professional, ethical and legal knowledge a midwife must have. Local trainees who pass the Council's examination are eligible to apply for registration; after registration they must still hold a valid practising certificate to practise, and must follow the code of conduct and continuing education requirements.
Local midwifery training is generally a post-registration programme requiring entrants to be registered nurses first. The Council issues reference guides on the subjects, recommended contact hours and clinical practice requirements, and institutions design programmes accordingly; students who finish the programme and pass the Council's examination may apply for registration. Midwives trained outside Hong Kong may also apply, submitting registration certificates, practising certificates and graduation certificates for individual assessment. Actual programme content and admissions are as announced by the institutions and the Council.
