What the work involves
Occupational therapists assess a client's ability to manage self-care, home, work and study, then set rehabilitation goals and pursue them through training, assistive devices and environmental modification. For example, they help a stroke patient dress and eat again, design a return-to-work plan for an injured worker, or provide sensory integration training for a child with special learning needs. They also teach care techniques to families and colleagues and work with doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and others on interprofessional case management, and tailor each plan to the client's home, school or workplace.
The statutory registration gate
The Allied Health Professions Ordinance and the Occupational Therapists (Registration and Disciplinary Procedure) Regulations require practising occupational therapists to be registered, handled by the Occupational Therapists Board. Applicants with non-prescribed qualifications must have graduated from a WFOT-approved programme, completed at least 1,000 hours of supervised clinical training, and meet English and experience requirements. Part I is full registration requiring at least one year of recognised experience; Part II requires at least 30 hours. The Board also recognises graduates of specified local programmes as eligible for registration.
Local training and development
Recognised local routes mainly include the Master in Occupational Therapy at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Occupational Therapy at Tung Wah College, both including clinical placements. After graduation a therapist may register in the appropriate part according to qualifications. Occupational therapists work in public and private hospitals, NGOs, special schools, residential care homes and private clinics, and as the population ages and rehabilitation needs grow, posts in community rehabilitation, elderly care and children's services continue to increase.
