What the work involves
Optometrists routinely examine eyes, measuring visual acuity, refractive error, eye pressure and the fundus to identify short-sight, long-sight, astigmatism, presbyopia, and problems such as glaucoma, cataract and diabetic retinopathy. When fitting spectacles and contact lenses they consider prescription, corneal condition and lifestyle, and teach proper care. If a suspected eye disease appears, the optometrist refers to an ophthalmologist, so accurate judgement on when to refer matters. They also explain findings and eye-care advice so that clients fully understand their eye condition and how to look after their eyes.
The registration gate
The Allied Health Professions Ordinance requires optometrists to be registered, with the Optometrists Board handling registration and discipline. A person holding a Board-recognised qualification comparable in standard to the PolyU optometry bachelor's degree may be registered; non-local qualifications are assessed individually by the Board. A person who has passed only the Board's refraction examination is registered in Part III of the register. After registration, practitioners must follow conduct rules and meet continuing professional development requirements. The Board keeps registration under review and may take disciplinary action where conduct rules are breached.
Training and development
The main local training route is the five-year Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Optometry at the PolyU School of Optometry, covering visual science, clinical science and clinical placements, with students practising at the PolyU optometry clinic and community clinics. Because most patients in Hong Kong communicate in Cantonese, students need good Cantonese before starting clinical placements. Graduates may also pursue further study such as a Doctor of Optometry or develop a specialty. Clinical placements are supervised by experienced optometrists and take place in real patient settings.
