工作實況：帶隊、查案同法庭
督察係前線嘅主管。巡邏時要分配人手、處理市民求助同突發事件，遇事要即時判斷風險同決定行動。處理案件方面，由初步調查、拘捕、搜證到錄取口供同準備檢控文件，督察都要把關，案件上庭時亦可能要作證。除咗執法，佢哋要面對市民嘅查詢同投訴，向公眾解釋程序，並要照顧小隊嘅訓練、紀律同士氣。工作時間包括輪更、通宵同候命，體力同心理壓力都大，溝通同判斷能力同樣重要。
入職關卡：學歷、語文、遴選同測試
投考督察有幾重關卡。身份方面，申請人必須係香港特別行政區永久性居民。學歷方面，須持大學學位，或副學士學位／高級文憑並符合指定成績要求，或按舊制要求達標。語文方面，須能閱讀及書寫中文、操流利粵語，並在中學文憑試或會考中英文考獲第2級或以上（或同等）。遴選方面，要通過視力及體能測試、遴選筆試、小組討論、延續面試同體格檢驗，並在《基本法及香港國安法》測試取得及格。部分指定學歷可豁免筆試部分，但整體程序仍然嚴謹。
培訓同晉升：警察學院同職級階梯
獲聘後，見習督察會入讀警察學院，修讀「見習督察警務領導及管理專業文憑」。呢個文憑已獲香港學術及職業資歷評審局認可，達資歷架構第五級，相當於學士學位級別。完成訓練、通過考核同試用期後，便正式出任督察。之後可循高級督察、總督察、警司等職級循序晉升，並按表現同經驗獲派不同崗位，例如刑偵、交通、訓練或管理部門。督察屬公務員（紀律人員）職位，薪酬同晉升機會由政府嘅紀律部隊制度規定。

The job: leading a squad, investigating and court
An inspector is a frontline supervisor. On patrol, the job is to allocate staff, handle public requests and incidents, and make on-the-spot judgements on risk and action. On cases, the inspector oversees everything from initial investigation and arrest to evidence-gathering, statement-taking and prosecution papers, and may testify in court. Beyond enforcement, inspectors face public enquiries and complaints, explain procedure to the public, and look after their squad's training, discipline and morale. The hours include shifts, overnight duties and on-call work, so the physical and psychological demands are high, and communication and judgement matter just as much.
The gate: academics, language, selection and tests
Becoming an inspector involves several gates. On identity, applicants must be Hong Kong permanent residents. On education, they must hold a university degree, or an associate degree or higher diploma with specified results, or meet the older requirements. On language, they must read and write Chinese, speak fluent Cantonese, and have Level 2 or above in Chinese and English in the HKDSEE or HKCEE (or equivalent). On selection, they must pass a vision and physical fitness test, a written test, a group discussion, an extended interview and a medical examination, and pass the Basic Law and National Security Law Test. Some specified results exempt parts of the written test, but the overall process remains demanding.
Training and progression: the Police College and ranks
On appointment, probationary inspectors study at the Police College for the Professional Diploma in Police Leadership and Management. Recognised by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications, it sits at Qualifications Framework Level 5, comparable to a bachelor's degree. After completing training, assessments and probation, they become inspectors. They can then advance through ranks such as Senior Inspector, Chief Inspector and Superintendent, taking on different postings — criminal investigation, traffic, training or management — according to performance and experience. The inspector post is a civil-service (disciplined services) position, with pay and promotion governed by the government's disciplined services system.
