工作實況：教學、帶班同行政
中學教師嘅核心工作係教學，但實際職務相當多元。佢哋要因應課程同學生能力設計教案、準備教材、出題同評分，亦要做班主任，處理班務、操行同家校溝通。唔少教師仲要負責學會、活動、科務或訓輔等行政工作，課後留校補課同開會係常態。近年學生精神健康受關注，教師要及早識別情緒困擾嘅學生，同輔導人員協作。呢份工講求學科知識之外，仲要耐性、溝通同抗壓能力。
關卡：檢定教員同准用教員
《教育條例》規定，任何喺學校任教嘅人都必須係檢定教員或准用教員，呢個係唔可以繞過嘅入行關卡。持教學資歷（例如本地教師證書、學位教師教育文憑或教育學士）並符合居留要求嘅人，可申請註冊為檢定教員；只有學術資歷而無教學訓練嘅人，只可由學校代為申請准用教員許可證，任教科目同條件受許可證限制，許可證亦會隨轉校而失效，須重新申請。非本地學歷須經學術及職業資歷評審局評審。想做正式教師，最終一般都會補讀教學資歷以取得檢定教員身分。
新安排：教師執業證書引言
教師註冊將來或有新關卡。教育局已向立法會交代修訂《教育條例》嘅建議，擬引入有效期不多於三個學年嘅教師執業證書，適用於公營、私立、國際學校同幼稚園教師（包括校長）。按方案，申請執業證書須持有有效嘅檢定教員證明書或准用教員許可證、已獲學校聘用、申報過去三年嘅刑事定罪、聲明遵守相關法律，並符合持續專業發展等要求。現階段呢個係建議中嘅安排，一旦立法落實，就會成為在職教師要定期續領嘅執業資格，讀者宜留意教育局最新公布。

The job: teaching, class duties and administration
A secondary school teacher's core work is teaching, but the actual duties are quite diverse. They design lessons and prepare materials, set and mark assessments according to the curriculum and students' ability, and serve as class teachers handling class affairs, conduct and home-school communication. Many also take on clubs, activities, subject-panel or discipline and guidance duties, with after-school remedial classes and meetings as the norm. As student mental health draws attention, teachers must identify students in emotional distress early and work with guidance staff. The job demands patience, communication and resilience beyond subject knowledge.
The gate: registered and permitted teachers
The Education Ordinance requires anyone teaching in a school to be a registered teacher or a permitted teacher, and this gate cannot be bypassed. A person with a teaching qualification (such as a local teacher's certificate, a Post-graduate Diploma in Education or a Bachelor of Education) and meeting residence requirements may apply to register as a registered teacher; someone with only academic qualifications and no teacher training may, through the school, apply for a permit to teach, with subjects and conditions limited by the permit, which also lapses on changing schools and must be re-applied for. Non-local qualifications must be assessed by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications. Those aiming to be established teachers usually complete a teaching qualification to attain registered teacher status.
New arrangements: the proposed practising certificate
Teacher registration may gain a new gate. The Education Bureau has put to the Legislative Council a proposal to amend the Education Ordinance by introducing a practising certificate valid for no more than three school years, applying to teachers (including principals) in public-sector, private, international and kindergarten settings. Under the proposal, applicants would need a valid certificate of registration as a teacher or a permit to teach, employment by a school, a declaration of criminal convictions over the past three years, a declaration of compliance with relevant laws, and fulfilment of continuing professional development and other requirements. At this stage it is a proposal, and once enacted it would become a periodically renewable practising qualification; readers should watch the Bureau's latest announcements.
