工作實況：由調查設計到數據發布
統計師嘅工作跨越整個統計流程。調查開始前，佢哋要釐清數據用途，設計問卷同抽樣方法，確保樣本有代表性；收集期間要監控數據質素，處理不回應同誤差。數據到手之後，佢哋要清洗、分析同建立模型，編製統計表同圖表，撰寫報告並向公眾同數據使用者發布。除咗例行統計，佢哋亦要進行數據科學研究，處理較複雜嘅課題，並向其他部門嘅統計組提供方法意見同數據質素評估，同時督導統計人員。
入行關卡：學歷同公務員考試
統計師係公務員職位，入職要同時滿足學歷同考試要求。學歷方面，政府統計處列明多條路徑：統計學碩士學位，或統計學一級／二級榮譽學士學位（或香港統計學會學位統計師資格）配合相關碩士學位，或統計學／相關學科一級／二級榮譽學士學位加最少兩年統計相關工作經驗。考試方面，申請人要通過綜合招聘考試嘅能力傾向測試、兩張語文試卷嘅語文能力要求，以及《基本法及香港國安法》測試。遴選仲包括一場三小時嘅中英文筆試，成績用作甄別面試人選。
職系階梯同相關職位
統計師嘅晉升階梯清晰，由統計師向上依次為高級統計師、助理處長、副處長同處長。除咗統計師，政府統計處仲有以副學位學歷入職嘅二級統計主任，工作包括協助設計問卷同選樣、審核同編碼、統計運算、編製統計表同協助分析，晉升階梯為二級統計主任、一級統計主任同高級統計主任；亦有以中學學歷入職嘅助理外勤統計主任，負責收集統計資料同協助督導兼職統計員。三條職系各有晉升空間，入職要求同學歷掛鈎。

The job: from survey design to data release
A statistical officer's work spans the whole statistical process. Before a survey, they clarify the purpose of the data, design questionnaires and sampling methods to keep the sample representative, and during collection they monitor data quality and handle non-response and error. Once data arrive, they clean and analyse them, build models, compile tables and charts, write reports and release them to the public and data users. Beyond routine statistics, they also carry out data-science studies on complex topics, advise the statistical units of other departments on methods and data-quality assessment, and supervise statistical staff.
The gate: qualifications and civil service examinations
A statistical officer is a civil service post, and entry requires both academic and examination requirements. On qualifications, the department lists several paths: a Master degree in Statistics; or a first or second class honours bachelor's degree in Statistics (or Graduate Statistician status) with a related Master degree; or a first or second class honours bachelor's degree in statistics or a related subject plus at least two years of statistics-related experience. On examinations, candidates must pass the Aptitude Test, meet the language requirements of the two language papers in the Common Recruitment Examination, and pass the Basic Law and National Security Law Test. Selection also includes a three-hour written paper in Chinese and English used to screen candidates for interview.
The grade ladder and related posts
The promotion ladder for a statistical officer is clear: above Statistical Officer come Senior Statistician, Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner. Besides the Statistical Officer grade, the department also has Statistical Officer II, entered with a sub-degree, whose work includes helping design questionnaires and select samples, editing and coding, statistical computation, compiling tables and assisting in analysis, with a ladder of Statistical Officer II, Statistical Officer I and Senior Statistical Officer. There is also the Assistant Census and Survey Officer grade, entered at secondary level, which collects statistical information and helps supervise temporary field officers. Each grade has its own progression and entry requirements tied to qualifications.
