The job: from load calculations to site checking
A structural engineer's work runs across design and construction. In design they build a structural model, calculate dead and live loads, wind and seismic action, design beams, columns, slabs, foundations and lateral-force systems, and consider material strength and safety factors. On site they check the contractor's drawings and calculations, inspect reinforcement layout, concrete strength and member dimensions, and resolve problems that arise. They also take part in structural assessment of old buildings, alterations and additions, slope and minor works, writing reports on structural safety. The work spans office and site and requires coordination with architects, contractors and other trades.
The gate: institution membership, registration and the AP system
A structural engineer's professional standing is guarded by several layers. The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers assesses engineering degrees and professional standards; applicants must hold an accredited degree, build experience through the formal training, general experience or mature route, and pass the structural discipline examination. The Engineers Registration Board maintains the register of registered professional engineers under the Engineers Registration Ordinance. At the Buildings Department, under the Buildings Ordinance, private building works require the appointment of an authorised person, registered structural engineer or registered geotechnical engineer; a registered structural engineer must first obtain the prescribed qualification, such as registered professional engineer (structural), have the required practical experience, and be recommended by the Registration Committee for inclusion in the register.
Pathways: consultancies, contractors and public bodies
Structural engineers have varied pathways. Most work for engineering consultancies doing design and checking, but they may join contractors for construction technique and site management, or join government departments, public bodies and major infrastructure operators such as rail and airport authorities. With experience and registration, they can practise independently or join an authorised person's team to sign and submit structural plans. Ranks typically start from trainee or assistant engineer and rise to engineer, senior engineer and principal engineer, or move into project or company management. Continuing study and involvement in professional institution activities matter for maintaining standards and widening options.
