On 29 November 1840, George Elliot returned to Britain due to his health, having held the posts of British Plenipotentiary in China and Commander-in-Chief of the expeditionary force; thereafter Charles Elliot took over as Plenipotentiary, while command of the naval and land forces went to Commodore Gordon Bremer.
