自1942年4月20日開始，日本佔領當局於香港實施日本化政策，把香港島更名為「香島」，同時將具英國淵源的街道名稱換成帶日本風格的新名，例如皇后大道中變成「中明治通」、德輔道中變成「東昭和通」，而半島酒店則改稱「東亞酒店」。
From 20 April 1942, the Japanese occupation authorities implemented a Japanisation policy in Hong Kong, renaming Hong Kong Island 'Xiangdao' and replacing street names of British origin with new Japanese-style names, for example Queen's Road Central became 'Naka-Meiji-dori', Des Voeux Road Central became 'Higashi-Showa-dori', and the Peninsula Hotel was renamed 'Toa Hotel'.
