On 15 April 1963, the Hilton Hotel opened at the junction of Garden Road in Central, with a Chinese restaurant, the Eagle's Nest, and a nightclub, and flourished in the 1970s; it was demolished from 1994 and the site was redeveloped into Cheung Kong Center.

On 23 April 1963, the Hong Kong government recognised the higher diploma awarded by Chung Chi, New Asia and United Colleges; however, graduates had to pass an English entrance examination before applying for government posts, the examination being held by the University of Hong Kong or the University of London and of matriculation standard.
