On 1 August 1982, the Trade and Industry Branch was formally established under the Government Secretariat, with responsibilities covering the Industry Department, the Trade Department and consumer protection affairs, and also overseeing the Hong Kong Customs and Excise; from the same day, the Customs and Excise Department was separated from the Trade and Industry Department and became an independent body.
After the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department became an independent department from its original structure, it was placed under the jurisdiction of the Lands and Works Branch.
