The formwork process and its demands
A formworker reads drawings, cuts and assembles materials and also controls dimensions, plumb and flatness so joints are tight and supports secure, striking the formwork only after the concrete has gained strength. Formwork quality directly shapes the accuracy and finish of the concrete structure, and unstable assembly endangers the pour, so setting out, checking and inspecting supports sit at the heart of every task. A formworker must also co-ordinate with the reinforcement and concreting trades, because formwork, steel fixing and pouring are interlocking steps on the same programme.
Certification through trade tests
The trade has no statutory licence, so skill is certified mainly through the Construction Industry Council's trade tests. The intermediate test requires a Hong Kong resident aged 18 or above, with some younger trainees accepted on a college certificate or apprenticeship contract; the skilled test requires at least four years of relevant experience, or one year after the corresponding intermediate certificate. The tests assess practical skill and, when passed, issue a certificate that the industry widely recognises as proof of competence, and a worker may progress from intermediate to skilled level as experience grows.
Worker registration and site risk
Formwork involves work at height, lifting and temporary support, so it is high risk. Workers must register under the Construction Workers Registration Ordinance, carry a registration card on site and, for some trades, hold a designated-skills registration. Weather, trade handovers and concrete curing shape the programme, and formworkers often chase tight nodes, making the balance between safety and progress a daily question. When the sequence is tight and time is short, experience in judging supports and safety measures matters most.
