The job: maintenance, repair and trapped-passenger incidents
Maintenance dominates the daily routine. Technicians inspect each unit on a set cycle, measuring rope wear, testing brakes and safety devices, cleaning and lubricating parts and replacing components that are due. Emergencies are the greatest test: when passengers are trapped, they must arrive fast, first reassure them, then locate the car and open the doors safely to free them. These procedures demand discipline and experience, since one wrong move can be dangerous. Beyond technical skill, the job requires reading drawings, writing reports and communicating with clients.
The gate: registered workers under the Lifts and Escalators Ordinance
To carry out lift or escalator work, a person must first become a registered worker. Applicants register with the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, and the class (A, B or C) depends on qualifications: one route is completing a recognised apprenticeship, holding a craft certificate and accumulating a specified number of years of experience; another is completing a recognised certificate course; a longer period of experience plus a trade test is also accepted. Registration generally runs for five years, and renewal requires a minimum period of in-service experience within the term and completion of a set number of training hours. To move up to registered engineer, one first obtains Registered Professional Engineer status in the relevant discipline plus a specified number of years of relevant experience.
Industry reality and pathways
With dense buildings and a huge stock of lifts and escalators, plus many older units due for upgrading, the trade faces a long-term manpower shortage. The work is hard, but it is skilled and in steady demand, and registration is a hard entry threshold that gives certificate holders some bargaining power. Pathways include lift engineering firms, property management companies and government departments; experienced technicians can also move into inspection, training or engineering supervision. Note that the industry sets high safety expectations, and a serious incident carries heavy responsibility and consequences, so registration and continuing training must never be taken lightly.
