English
Process and daily work
Indoor work covers walls, ceilings, timber doors and furniture, while exterior work depends on scaffolding and weather and uses rollers, brushes or spraying. Painters read colour charts, mix colours, and judge how many coats and which coating is needed, such as anti-mould, fire-retardant or waterproof products.
Entry and certification
No statutory licence: most start as apprentices or helpers, or take a Vocational Training Council course and then the Construction Industry Council painting trade test. Site work requires a registered construction worker card and recognised safety training, and solvent handling must follow guidance.
Pay and progression
The employer sets day rates or piece rates with no single scale; self-employed painters deduct materials and labour from the quoted price, so income follows the days worked and this site prints no estimate. The route runs apprentice or helper, painter, tradesman, then supervisor or self-employed contractor, with scope to specialise in exterior work, fire-retardant coatings or decorative finishes.
