The job: from refrigerant pressure to control boards
A technician meets one refrigeration system after another. On installation they select equipment by load, run copper pipework, apply insulation, pull a vacuum and charge refrigerant; on servicing they clean condenser and evaporator coils, check drains and insulation, and measure pressures and current. Diagnosis is the hardest part: a system that will not cool may be low on refrigerant, but could equally reflect poor condenser heat rejection, a blocked expansion valve, a worn compressor or a control-circuit fault. Technicians cross-check with pressure gauges, clamp meters and thermometers before drawing conclusions. Work settings vary from factory plant rooms and mall air-handling rooms to rooftop units, with long hours and shift or standby duties in peak season.
The gate: trade tests and apprenticeship
Hong Kong has no single licensing regime for refrigeration and air-conditioning technicians; the main credential is a Construction Industry Council electrical and mechanical trade test. The air-conditioning field covers several trades spanning electrical control, independent systems, air supply and water systems, assessed on assembly, installation, commissioning, servicing and repair, with a written paper on safety and technical knowledge. Apprenticeship is another route: the Vocational Training Council's refrigeration and air-conditioning apprenticeship combines work and study to build years and hands-on experience. Crucially, any electrical control work on fixed electrical installations must be carried out by an electrical worker registered with the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, which is a hard requirement under the Electricity Ordinance.
Industry reality and pathways
Shopping malls, offices, data centres, hotels and homes all depend on central cooling and refrigeration, and tightening energy-efficiency and refrigerant rules keep demand for technicians steady. On sites, the Construction Industry Council and the Buildings Department operate designated-trade and competent-technical-person regimes, so workers doing designated operations must be registered as skilled or semi-skilled workers in the relevant trade. Career paths run from mechanic to master, then on to technician, maintenance supervisor or even engineer, and specialists can focus on particular equipment such as chillers or commercial refrigerators. Newcomers are best advised to build a solid electrical and mechanical foundation, pass the trade test and accumulate on-site experience.
