English
Day-to-day work
Reading drawings and measuring come first: confirming dimensions, door swings, cabinet layouts and how joints will be finished, then cutting, preparing the substrate, installing and finishing. At handover the carpenter checks that surfaces are level, that doors and drawers run smoothly and that finishes are unmarked, adjusting on the spot with the designer or owner as needed.
Entry and skill certification
No statutory licence is required; most carpenters start as apprentices or helpers and learn on the job. Another route is a Vocational Training Council carpentry or interior fitting-out course followed by the Construction Industry Council trade test for carpentry, which establishes the skill level. As with other site trades, a registered construction worker card and recognised safety training are required on site.
Pay and progression
The employer sets day rates, piece rates or monthly pay, with no single scale; those working for themselves deduct materials and labour from the quoted price, so income follows the number of working days and jobs, and this site prints no estimate. The route runs apprentice or helper, carpenter, tradesman, then renovation project lead, with scope to specialise in custom furniture, exhibition set building or heritage joinery.
