English
Trades and statutory division of work
A renovation project usually involves several trades while the owner signs a single contract, so the contractor coordinates them: tiling, carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, window and air-conditioning work each enter in sequence, and items requiring statutory qualifications must be passed to the licence holder, with application and completion documents kept.
Entry and qualifications
There is no single licence: most people start as an apprentice or a tradesman's helper, build up tiling, carpentry or electrical and plumbing experience, then take a Construction Industry Council trade test or the relevant registration (minor works, electrical, plumbing) to widen the scope of work they can take on. Others study interior design or building first and learn the trades on site.
Pay and progression
Pay depends on how you work: employed tradesmen are paid day rates or a monthly wage, while those taking on their own projects deduct materials, labour and insurance from the quoted price, so profit tracks the schedule and the number of variation orders, and this site prints no estimate. The route runs apprentice or helper, tradesman, foreman, then renovation company owner or contractor.
