The job: pruning and removal on the rope
Before starting, tree climbers carry out a risk assessment, checking for decay, cracks or structural defects and deciding on the climbing route and anchor points. In the canopy they cut limbs in sections with a chainsaw, using ropes to control the direction of fall so people and property are not struck, and may install cables or braces to reduce the risk of failure. The work demands fitness, judgement and teamwork, with ground staff managing ropes, clearing debris and standing by for rescue.
The gate: the voluntary register and training requirements
Hong Kong has no statutory licence for tree climbers; the gate is the Development Bureau's Register of Tree Management Personnel. The climber category requires applicants to have basic occupational safety and health training, complete recognised rope-climbing, chainsaw and aerial-rescue training or skills assessment, and have at least one year of tree-care experience. The scheme is voluntary, requires registrants to follow a code of conduct, and runs for three years, with renewal conditional on continuing employment and continuing education records. Conduct and performance are monitored, and the scheme is reviewed with the industry from time to time.
Industry reality and pathways
With public concern over extreme weather and tree-failure risk, government and private owners are investing more in tree inspection and care, so demand for tree climbers is rising; it is a little-known trade with real demand. Careers can run from climber to tree work supervisor, or into arborist or risk-assessment roles, and workers may join government tree-management units, landscape contractors or set up on their own. Newcomers are advised to gain experience through trainee or assistant posts while pursuing recognised qualifications.
