1834年7月15日，律勞卑抵達澳門，未經廣東當局同意進入廣州，交涉近兩個月無果而還。
On 15 July 1834, Lord Napier arrived in Macau and entered Canton without the consent of the Guangdong authorities, returning after nearly two months of fruitless negotiations.

清道光十四年八月二十一日，英國派駐中國的首位商務監督律勞卑向本國政府發出書函，提出動用軍事力量奪取位於珠江口東面的香港島。
On the twenty-first day of the eighth month of the fourteenth year of the Daoguang reign of the Qing dynasty, Lord Napier, the first British Superintendent of Trade in China, sent a letter to his government proposing the use of military force to seize Hong Kong Island, located east of the Pearl River estuary.
