How big is Hong Kong, and is it an island?
Hong Kong’s land area is about 1,114.6 km², made up of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and over 260 islands. Hong Kong as a whole is not an island, though Hong Kong Island is — Kowloon and the New Territories are joined to the mainland.
Why is housing in Hong Kong so expensive?
Three structural reasons: developable land is scarce (about 40% of land is country park and green belt, much of the rest is hilly), private housing dominates the stock while public supply is bound by construction cycles, and low rates plus cross-border demand have capitalised heavily into prices.
The harbour skyline and dense cityscape, cha chaan teng and dim sum culture, the public transport network, country parks and hiking trails, and its role as a shopping and financial centre.

At end-2025 the Census and Statistics Department recorded a land area of 1,114.6 km²: Hong Kong Island 80.7, Kowloon 46.9, and the New Territories and Islands 986.9. Reclamation increases the figure slightly every year, so the year-end reference date matters.

Under the Country Parks Ordinance, AFCD designates 25 country parks and 22 special areas, totalling about 44,842 hectares or roughly 40% of the land. The four official long-distance trails are the MacLehose Trail, the Lantau Trail, the Hong Kong Trail and the Wilson Trail.
Why is Hong Kong so densely populated?
Of Hong Kong’s roughly 1,115 km², much is hills, country parks and steep slopes, leaving little developable land. With economic activity concentrated on the urban core, built-up areas and Hong Kong Island reach very high densities.
Who owns the land in Hong Kong, and how does the government grant it?
All land in Hong Kong is legally owned by the State (the HKSAR) and the government grants usage rights through leases of various terms to private parties, institutions and government departments. In 2025 private permanent quarters numbered about 1,762,000 (56.7%), public rental housing 877,000 (28.2%) and subsidised sale flats 467,000 (15.0%).
