What is the population of Hong Kong in 2025 and 2026?
The Census and Statistics Department announced in August 2026 that the provisional mid-2026 population estimate was 7,518,300, up 0.3% from 7,498,900 at mid-2025. Growth reflects both cross-boundary movement and natural change.
The Census and Statistics Department releases official products on population, the economy (GDP, inflation, trade, employment) and household statistics. Trustworthy data should state the source department, reference period, coverage and release date.
Why is Hong Kong so densely populated?
Of Hong Kong’s roughly 1,115 km², much is hills, country parks and steep slopes, leaving little developable land. With economic activity concentrated on the urban core, built-up areas and Hong Kong Island reach very high densities.
