Did Ip Man really fight a public challenge match in Japanese-occupied Foshan, taking on ten men at once and defeating the Japanese General Miura?

事實應該係點 / What really happens

葉問（1893—1972）原名葉繼問，佛山人，師從陳華順、梁壁。據廣東文史網，他曾任國民政府佛山偵緝大隊書記、廣州防務稽查長、佛山警察局刑警隊隊長、督察長、代理局長等職。日佔時期，日本憲兵隊確曾邀他出任武術教練，遭其拒絕，憲兵隊遂派高手與他私下比試，葉問取勝後為避報復離開佛山。可考史料只有這一節，並無公開擂台，亦非與日本將軍對決，「一個打十個」屬戲劇加工。1949年10月，葉問經澳門來港，在深水埗教詠春。電影把他拍成不問世事的富家公子，又安排妻子張永成同住香港；實情是他來港後與妻分隔，張永成1950年返佛山取證件後因1951年邊境封閉無法再來，1960年在佛山病逝，葉問終生未再見妻。

Ip Man (1893–1972), born Ip Kai-man in Foshan, trained under Chan Wah-shun and Leung Bik. According to Guangdong's official culture-and-history archive, he served as a secretary in Foshan's detective unit, an inspector in Guangzhou, and later as head of the criminal investigation unit, superintendent and acting chief of the Foshan police. During the Japanese occupation the military police invited him to teach, he refused, and a Japanese expert was sent to spar with him privately; he won and then left Foshan to avoid reprisals. That is the only documented episode: there was no public tournament and no duel with a Japanese general, while the "one against ten" fight is dramatic invention. Ip Man moved to Hong Kong in October 1949. The film shows his wife living with him there, but in reality they were separated after the 1951 border closure; she died in Foshan in 1960 and he never saw her again.

• 電影的公開擂台、日本將軍三浦及「一個打十個」情節，均無可查證史料支持，屬虛構。
• 葉問實為投身軍警界的警官；電影卻把他塑造成不問世事、只在家練拳的富家子弟。
• 電影安排妻子張永成隨他同住香港；史實是葉問1949年獨自來港，夫婦因1951年邊境封閉從此分隔，張永成1960年在佛山病逝。
