Why it matters

It mashed kung fu with football into a line everyone quotes: if you have no dream, how are you different from a salted fish?

背景 Background

Shaolin Soccer (2001), directed by and starring Stephen Chow, popularised a kung-fu-meets-football comedy across Chinese-speaking audiences and later won Best Film at the 21st Hong Kong Film Awards among other prizes. Its line about dreams and salted fish became one of the most quoted Hong Kong screen lines about aspiration. This site records cultural circulation, not box office.
