「香港島及九龍」唔係一個地方，而係條約之下嘅管治範圍用語：香港島先割讓，九龍半島界限街以南隨後併入，新界要到租借之後才成為另一個範圍。志錄用呢個寫法講人口、法律適用、邊界同行政安排嘅時候，講嘅係一個「未包括新界嘅香港」。呢條軸把同一用語嘅條目排成一線，睇得到範圍本身係幾時、點樣改變。

“Hong Kong Island and Kowloon” is not a single place but a phrase for a governed territory: the island was ceded first, the Kowloon peninsula south of Boundary Street was added later, and the New Territories only became a separate entity with the lease. When the archive uses the phrase for population, the reach of the law, boundaries or administration, it means a Hong Kong that excludes the New Territories. The thread lines those entries up so the territory’s own changing extent is visible.

呢條軸係用語軸，唔係地方軸：「香港島及九龍」跨兩個地理區，亦同「維多利亞城」、「九龍寨城」等軸部分重疊，所以條目會同時出現喺幾條軸，唔可以相加當成總數。只認原文逐字有呢個寫法嘅條目；同義而措辭唔同者（例如只寫「割讓地」、「英屬香港」）一律唔收，寧可少收都唔靠推論。各區人口數字係現行區議會分區口徑，唔可以當成呢個歷史範圍嘅數字。

This is a phrase axis, not a place axis: the phrase spans two geographical areas and partly overlaps other axes such as Victoria City and the Kowloon Walled City, so entries appear on several axes and must never be added up as a total. Only entries that contain this exact wording are matched; synonymous but differently worded references (for example “ceded territory” or “British Hong Kong” alone) are deliberately left out rather than inferred. District population figures follow present-day district boundaries and are not figures for this historical territory.
