李碧華，原名李白，1959年生於香港，祖籍廣東台山，畢業於香港真光中學。她中學時期已向報刊投稿，1976年起先後任職小學教師、人物專訪記者及專欄作家，其後投身電視與電影編劇。1970年代末，她為電視台撰寫劇本，作品包括《七女性》《北斗星》《獅子山下》等；其後轉寫電影劇本，1981年與張堅庭、陳召合編《父子情》，該片奪得第一屆香港電影金像獎最佳電影。1980年代起她轉向小說創作，作品多先在報刊連載，再結集成書，題材橫跨歷史、神怪與都會情慾，常以女性與宿命為中心，風格以奇情、前世今生見稱，代表作有《胭脂扣》《霸王別姬》《青蛇》《秦俑》《潘金蓮之前世今生》《誘僧》《餃子》等，多部被改編成電影。其中《胭脂扣》寫石塘咀名妓如花與十二少跨越陰陽的愛情，《霸王別姬》寫京劇藝人程蝶衣與段小樓數十年的糾葛，《青蛇》則重寫白蛇傳說。1988年，她與邱剛健合編、由關錦鵬執導的《胭脂扣》為她贏得第八屆香港電影金像獎最佳編劇；1993年，她與蘆葦合編、由陳凱歌執導的《霸王別姬》奪得第四十六屆康城影展金棕櫚獎及美國金球獎最佳外語片，令她的小說與劇本進入更廣的國際視野。她亦曾參與《青蛇》《潘金蓮之前世今生》等片的改編，並與導演陳果合作《餃子》；2013年，她的《李碧華鬼魅系列》由任達華、李志毅、陳果等執導，她親自參與編劇及策劃。李碧華亦曾為舞劇擔任策劃，長年在報刊撰寫專欄，為人低調，極少公開露面，作品卻在華語地區長年再版流傳，是少數小說與影視改編同樣受注目的香港作家。

Lilian Lee, whose original name is Li Bai, was born in Hong Kong in 1959 to a family from Taishan, Guangdong, and was educated at the well-known girls' school True Light Middle School. She began submitting articles to newspapers as a secondary student, and from 1976 worked successively as a primary school teacher, a profile interviewer and a columnist before becoming a screenwriter. In the late 1970s she wrote for television, contributing to series such as Seven Women, Big Dipper and Below the Lion Rock, and then moved into film, co-writing Father and Son with Cheung Kin-ting and Chan Siu in 1981; the film won Best Picture at the first Hong Kong Film Awards. From the 1980s she turned to fiction, her stories usually first serialised in newspapers before appearing as books, spanning history, the supernatural and urban desire and centring on women and fate. Her novels include Rouge, Farewell My Concubine, Green Snake, A Terra-Cotta Warrior, My Name Ain't Suzie, Temptress Moon and Dumplings, many of which became films; Rouge tells of the courtesan Ru Hua and Twelfth Master across the boundary of death, Farewell My Concubine of the Peking-opera artists Cheng Dieyi and Duan Xiaolou over decades, and Green Snake retells the legend of the White Snake. Her screenplay for Rouge, co-written with Yau Kong-kin and directed by Stanley Kwan in 1988, won her Best Screenplay at the 8th Hong Kong Film Awards; the film adaptation of Farewell My Concubine, co-written with Wei Lu and directed by Chen Kaige in 1993, won the Palme d'Or at the 46th Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, bringing her work to a far wider international audience. She also worked on the film versions of Green Snake and My Name Ain't Suzie and collaborated with director Fruit Chan on Dumplings; in 2013 her Tales from the Dark series was directed by Simon Yam, Lee Chi-ngai and Fruit Chan, with Lee herself writing and planning. She has also been a planner for dance productions and a long-time newspaper columnist. Keeping an extremely low profile, she rarely appears in public, yet her books have been reprinted and read across the Chinese-speaking world for decades, making her one of the few Hong Kong writers equally noted for her fiction and its screen adaptations.
