Lilian Lee, born in Hong Kong in 1959, is the novelist and screenwriter behind some of Hong Kong cinema's most enduring stories: Rouge (1987), about a courtesan who waits fifty years for her lover, and Farewell My Concubine (1993), which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Her writing blends ghost stories with an unflinching eye for desire and obsession, and she has remained famously anonymous, never appearing in public.
