東區沿港島北岸向東伸延，由北角、鰂魚涌、太古、西灣河、筲箕灣、柴灣伸至小西灣，東端為鯉魚門海峽。區內地勢北低南高，南面為柏架山、大潭峽等山嶺。

The Eastern District follows the northern shore of Hong Kong Island eastward from North Point and Quarry Bay through Tai Koo, Sai Wan Ho, Shau Kei Wan, Chai Wan and Siu Sai Wan, ending at the Lei Yue Mun Strait. The land rises southward to Mount Parker and Tai Tam Gap.

柴灣早年是工業區，太古糖廠歷史可追溯至 1880 年代，現址已改建為太古城。北角自戰後吸納來自上海及福建的移民，曾有「小上海」「小福建」之稱。筲箕灣是港島歷史最悠久的漁村之一，天后廟具二百多年歷史。

Chai Wan was an early industrial area. The Taikoo Sugar Refinery, whose history dates to the 1880s, once stood where Taikoo Shing now lies. North Point absorbed Shanghai and Fujian migrants after the war and was nicknamed “Little Shanghai” and “Little Fujian”. Shau Kei Wan is one of the oldest fishing settlements on the island, with a Tin Hau temple over 200 years old.

港鐵港島線及將軍澳線於北角及鰂魚涌交匯，港島線經太古、西灣河、筲箕灣、杏花邨延伸至柴灣。電車以筲箕灣巴士總站一帶為東端總站。東區走廊貫穿區內，是往中環及東隧的主要快速公路。

The Island and Tseung Kwan O lines interchange at North Point and Quarry Bay. The Island Line continues through Tai Koo, Sai Wan Ho, Shau Kei Wan and Heng Fa Chuen to Chai Wan. The tram network’s eastern terminus is at Shau Kei Wan. Island Eastern Corridor is the main expressway through the district, linking Central and the Eastern Harbour Crossing.

鰂魚涌太古坊及太古中心是港島東主要商業核心，匯聚跨國企業辦公室。北角、柴灣有傳統工商業及住宅區。柴灣工業區仍有物流及製造業活動，北角則以住宅及民生商業為主。

Taikoo Place and Cityplaza form the main business core of island east, housing multinational offices. North Point and Chai Wan mix older residential and industrial districts. The Chai Wan industrial belt retains logistics and manufacturing activity, while North Point is predominantly residential with neighbourhood commerce.
