The Eastern District follows the northern shore of Hong Kong Island eastward from North Point and Quarry Bay through Tai Koo, Sai Wan Ho, Shau Kei Wan, Chai Wan and Siu Sai Wan, ending at the Lei Yue Mun Strait. The land rises southward to Mount Parker and Tai Tam Gap.

柴灣早年是工業區，太古糖廠歷史可追溯至 1880 年代，現址已改建為太古城。北角自戰後吸納來自上海及福建的移民，曾有「小上海」「小福建」之稱。筲箕灣是港島歷史最悠久的漁村之一，天后廟具二百多年歷史。筲箕灣為開埠後最早漁村之一，天后廟逾二百年；柴灣1880年代起有太古糖廠，太古城即建於舊廠址。鰂魚涌原名「鰂魚涌」指魚群水道，為舊石礦場。北角戰後吸納上海、福建移民，形成「小上海」「小福建」文化。

Chai Wan was an early industrial area. The Taikoo Sugar Refinery, whose history dates to the 1880s, once stood where Taikoo Shing now lies. North Point absorbed Shanghai and Fujian migrants after the war and was nicknamed “Little Shanghai” and “Little Fujian”. Shau Kei Wan is one of the oldest fishing settlements on the island, with a Tin Hau temple over 200 years old. Shau Kei Wan was one of the earliest fishing villages after 1841, its Tin Hau Temple over two centuries old; the Taikoo Sugar Refinery operated at Chai Wan from the 1880s, and Taikoo Shing now stands on the site. Quarry Bay's name preserves the memory of a fish-filled waterway and its quarrying past. After the war, North Point absorbed migrants from Shanghai and Fujian, fostering a distinctive "Little Shanghai" and "Little Fujian" culture.

The Island and Tseung Kwan O lines interchange at North Point and Quarry Bay. The Island Line continues through Tai Koo, Sai Wan Ho, Shau Kei Wan and Heng Fa Chuen to Chai Wan. The tram network’s eastern terminus is at Shau Kei Wan. Island Eastern Corridor is the main expressway through the district, linking Central and the Eastern Harbour Crossing.
