Central is the principal business district; Admiralty contains government headquarters and the Legislative Council Complex. The district continues west through Sheung Wan, Sai Ying Pun and Kennedy Town, with Mid-Levels on the slope and Victoria Peak at the top.

The terrain drops steeply from the Peak through Mid-Levels to the northern shoreline, which runs from Central and Admiralty through Sheung Wan, Sai Ying Pun, Shek Tong Tsui and Kennedy Town.

1841 年 1 月 26 日英軍在「水坑口」登陸，香港開埠即由此區開始，中環是殖民地最早發展的核心。上環文武廟建於 1847 年，是香港歷史最悠久的廟宇之一。香港大學 1911 年於薄扶林道創校。建於 1860 年代的政府山一帶至今仍是政務樞紐：政府總部、立法會綜合大樓與禮賓府均位於金鐘。

British forces landed at Possession Point on 26 January 1841, making this the birthplace of colonial Hong Kong, with Central as the earliest core. Man Mo Temple in Sheung Wan dates from 1847 and is among the city’s oldest temples. The University of Hong Kong was founded on Bonham Road in 1911. The Government Hill area has remained the seat of government: the Central Government Offices, Legislative Council Complex and Government House all lie in Admiralty.
