中西區位於香港島西北部，面向維多利亞港，南枕太平山。地勢由海拔 552 米的太平山頂向北陡降，山腰為半山區。海岸線由中環、金鐘、上環、西營盤伸延至石塘咀、堅尼地城。堅尼地城是港島線西端終點。

Central and Western occupies the north-western corner of Hong Kong Island, facing Victoria Harbour, with Victoria Peak (552 m) rising behind. The terrain drops steeply from the Peak through Mid-Levels to the northern shoreline, which runs from Central and Admiralty through Sheung Wan, Sai Ying Pun, Shek Tong Tsui and Kennedy Town.

British forces landed at Possession Point on 26 January 1841, making this the birthplace of colonial Hong Kong, with Central as the earliest core. Man Mo Temple in Sheung Wan dates from 1847 and is among the city’s oldest temples. The University of Hong Kong was founded on Bonham Road in 1911. The Government Hill area has remained the seat of government: the Central Government Offices, Legislative Council Complex and Government House all lie in Admiralty.

SoHo and Lan Kwai Fong in Central are hotspots for international dining and nightlife. The Gough Street and Tai Ping Shan Street areas have become a hub for creative local shops, galleries, cafes and designer boutiques. The annual Standard Chartered Arts in the Park festival is a major community arts event held in Victoria Park, Causeway Bay.

港鐵港島線設上環、中環、金鐘、西營盤、香港大學、堅尼地城站；東涌線及機場快線以香港站為市區終點。中環碼頭有渡輪前往離島。中區行人天橋系統連接主要商業樓宇，德輔道中與皇后大道中一帶是電車主要路線。

The Island Line serves Sheung Wan, Central, Admiralty, Sai Ying Pun, HKU and Kennedy Town; the Tung Chung Line and Airport Express terminate at Hong Kong Station. Central Piers provide ferries to the outlying islands. The elevated Central walkway network links the main commercial buildings, and trams run along Des Voeux Road and Queen’s Road.

Central is the heart of Hong Kong’s international financial centre, with banks, insurers, law, accountancy and professional services concentrated around IFC, Central Plaza and Exchange Square. Admiralty combines the government quarter with Grade-A offices. Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun are largely small shops and restaurants, and the western end of the district has become a residential and dining hotspot in recent years.
