南區涵蓋整個港島南部，面向南中國海，包括香港仔、鴨脷洲、黃竹坑、壽臣山、淺水灣、赤柱及石澳。北面以薄扶林、聶高信山與其他區為界。鴨脷洲是全球人口密度最高的島嶼之一。

The Southern District covers the whole south side of Hong Kong Island, facing the South China Sea. It includes Aberdeen, Ap Lei Chau, Wong Chuk Hang, Shouson Hill, Repulse Bay, Stanley and Shek O. Ap Lei Chau is one of the most densely populated islands in the world.

「香港」之名可能源於香港仔一帶的香料貿易及漁村香港村。赤柱在開埠初期是英軍駐地，亦是當時外商聚居地之一。香港仔避風塘是本地船隻傳統停泊處。大潭水塘群於 1888 年起分階段建成，是香港最早的大型水務工程之一。

The name “Hong Kong” may derive from the incense and fishing settlement around Aberdeen. Stanley hosted a British garrison and early foreign merchants in the colonial period. The Aberdeen typhoon shelter remains a traditional anchorage for local boats. The Tai Tam reservoir group, completed in stages from 1888, is among the earliest major waterworks in the territory.

港鐵南港島線由金鐘經海洋公園、黃竹坑、利東伸至海怡半島。香港仔隧道及薄扶林道是連接港島北岸的主要通道。香港仔及赤柱有巴士總站網絡。

The South Island Line runs from Admiralty through Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang and Lei Tung to South Horizons. Aberdeen Tunnel and Pok Fu Lam Road are the main links to the northern shore. Bus termini serve Aberdeen and Stanley.

Wong Chuk Hang is transforming from a traditional industrial zone into a commercial and residential area, with new malls and offices around the MTR station. Aberdeen retains fishing and seafood dining; Ap Lei Chau has large housing estates and a market. Repulse Bay and Stanley are mainly tourism and dining areas.
