Wu Jining is head coach of the Hong Kong, China rowing team. With close to forty years of rowing and coaching experience, he has coached both the mainland Chinese national squad and the Canadian national team, and introduced a new, systematic training approach after taking charge of Hong Kong. His methods have been endorsed by rowers such as Chiu Hin-chun and Hung Wing-yan, who credit him with significant improvement and with transforming the team. He led the squad at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, saying beforehand that he was confident Hong Kong could win at least two medals; the team ultimately took one gold, one silver and one bronze. He attaches great importance to training camps, having previously taken the team to the mainland for a six-month camp alongside provincial squads. He felt the mainland facilities were excellent and that athletes progressed faster on all fronts, noting that Hong Kong won three golds at the Australian championships soon after. He also believes mainland camps let rowers get to know the local competition environment and adapt to venues early, an important part of Asian Games preparation. On the eve of the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games he told the media that bad weather had compressed the rowing programme from five days to two and scrapped the repechage, disrupting pre-Games training, but that he would work to minimise the impact and stressed that under the revised format "every race is crucial". Through disciplined, systematic training he has helped Hong Kong rowing challenge for results at international level.
