Trees and greening

Hong Kong’s tree cover is concentrated in the country parks, but the urban forest is substantial. The Greening, Landscape and Tree Management Section of the Development Bureau (established 2010) coordinates tree management; departments including Highways, LCSD and Lands manage trees in their own areas. The Register of Old and Valuable Trees is maintained by the Tree Management Office. It records trees of 100 years or older, or of particular value, which receive special protection and may not be felled without permission. Urban trees face particular challenges: limited growing space, typhoon damage and pests such as brown root rot disease. Super Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018 felled tens of thousands of trees across the city, exposing weaknesses in urban tree management. Common street trees include Chinese banyan (Ficus microcarpa), flame of the forest and kapok. The Chinese banyan is the city’s most familiar street tree, with century-old specimens in older districts. Tree preservation often conflicts with development: retaining old trees in new development areas is a recurring policy issue. The Development Bureau publishes annual tree-risk management reports. This site records only tree policy and statistics with official sources; individual tree locations and conditions follow the Tree Register.
