吳宇森1946年喺廣州出世，1951年隨家人移居香港，青少年時期靠教會資助生活，其後入電影圈由場記做起。1986年得徐克支持執導《英雄本色》，將暴力美學推向極致，周潤發嘅小馬哥成為一代人偶像；1989年《喋血雙雄》、1992年《辣手神探》確立白鴿、雙槍、慢鏡嘅標記美學。1993年赴美發展，《奪面雙雄》(1997)《職業特工隊2》(2000) 令佢成為荷李活一線導演。2008年史詩鉅製《赤壁》為華語大片立下里程碑。2010年獲威尼斯影展終身成就金獅獎，表揚佢對全球動作電影美學嘅深遠影響。

John Woo, born in Guangzhou in 1946, moved to Hong Kong as a child and entered film as a script supervisor. Supported by Tsui Hark, he directed A Better Tomorrow (1986), pushing stylised violence to its limit and turning Chow Yun-fat's Mark Gor into an icon of a generation; The Killer (1989) and Hard Boiled (1992) perfected his signature of doves, twin guns and slow motion. Moving to Hollywood in 1993, Face/Off (1997) and Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) made him a top-tier director, while the epic Red Cliff (2008) marked a milestone for Chinese-language blockbusters. In 2010 he received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at Venice for his profound influence on global action cinema.
