English
Peng Chang-kuei is a Hong Kong film director and screenwriter active in the 1970s. In 1976 he directed the action film The Tiger of Northland, produced by Raymond Chow for Golden Harvest with Cheng Bing-shen as writer and starring Sammo Hung, Lydia Shum, Tony Liu, Maria Yi, Wu Chia-hsiang and others; running about 95 minutes, it opened in Hong Kong and Taiwan in July of that year and was also released to Chinese-speaking markets overseas. Built around Shaolin martial arts, it belonged to the kung-fu genre then in vogue and was one of Golden Harvest's vehicles for its martial-arts stars. He is also said to have worked behind the scenes on Jackie Chan's Dragon Lord (1982), though sources differ as to whether his role was writing or continuity. Beyond these records, public information about Peng himself is very limited, and his birth year, biography and full filmography remain to be verified; what can be confirmed is only a handful of credited films. In the 1970s the Hong Kong industry was closely tied to the Taiwan market and produced both kung-fu and Mandarin pictures, and Peng was one of those working as a director in that setting. His credits cluster in the mid-to-late 1970s, with no further verifiable directing work afterwards. This entry rests only on what is currently documented, without speculation.
